Euroanaesthesia is one of the world’s largest and most influential scientific congresses for anaesthesia professionals. Held annually throughout Europe, our congress is a contemporary event geared towards education, knowledge exchange and innovation in anaesthesia, intensive care, pain and perioperative medicine, as well as a platform for immense international visibility for scientific research.

The Specialist Societies contribute to high-quality educational opportunities for European anaesthesiologists and intensivists, fostering discussion and sharing, while the National Societies, through NASC, maintain standards, promote events and courses, and facilitate connections. All partnerships collectively drive dialogue, learning, and growth in the anaesthesiology and intensive care sector.

With over 40 years of publication history, the EJA (European Journal of Anaesthesiology) has established itself as a highly respected and influential journal in its field. It covers a wide range of topics related to anaesthesiology and intensive care medicine, including perioperative medicine, pain management, critical care, resuscitation, and patient safety.

Scientific Committee Chair

The term of office will start on 1 July 2025.

Deadline for applications is 2 December 2024.

The ESAIC is seeking to recruit the future Chairperson of the Scientific Committee.


The Chair of the Scientific Committee is a critical leadership role within ESAIC. This position involves guiding the strategic direction of ESAIC congresses, ensuring the scientific quality of the congresses’ programmes and dissemination of cutting-edge knowledge within the fields of anaesthesiology and intensive care. The chair of the Scientific Committee is also a member of the Board of Directors. The role requires strong leadership, a solid scientific background, and the ability to foster an environment that promotes both clinical and academic excellence in anaesthesiology and intensive care.


The newly elected Chairperson will take over from Professor Michel Struys (Groningen, The Netherlands), current Chair of the Scientific Committee. The Scientific Committee is the biggest ESAIC committee. It is an umbrella committee gathering 6 Forums, including approximately 80 members. Key Responsibilities

Duties and tasks of the Scientific Committee Chair:

1. Strategic Leadership

  • To be responsible for delivering the Scientific Programmes of the main ESAIC Congresses (for example Euroanaesthesia and Focus Meeting).
  • To identify and promote innovations and best practices, to further increase the quality of the programmes and launch new activities and projects.
  • To advise the ESAIC Board of Directors concerning other meetings’ endorsements and relations with international and specialist societies.

2. Governance

  • To prepare and chair at least 3 Scientific Committee meetings per year (one during Euroanaesthesia), ensuring effective communication, participation, and adherence to established governance principles.
  • To attend the Board, Council and General Assembly meetings.
  • To monitor the financial outcome and ethical compliance of the Committee activities, in accordance with ESAIC policies.
  • To liaise with other committees, to make sure that the scientific committee supports other ESAIC initiatives.

3. Administration

  • To collaborate closely with the Scientific Department of the ESAIC Headquarters in Brussels throughout the year.
  • To write an annual report about activities and achievements of the committee, to be presented to the Council and the General Assembly.
  • Other responsibilities as defined by ESAIC bylaws and Board.

Qualifications

The applicant must:

  • be a highly respected, senior, certified anaesthesiologist and have an established track record in the field of anaesthesiology and/or intensive care;
  • have an up-to-date active ESAIC membership and maintain it during the whole mandate duration. The applicant must have been an active member of ESAIC for at least two years from the date of the application deadline. Therefore an active membership since 2022 is required.
  • work in a different country than the current chair, who is based in The Netherlands. Therefore, applicants from The Netherlands are not eligible for this upcoming position.
  • Act as a role model in terms of leadership and according ESAIC’s core values and
  • the Code of Conduct’ policy.

1. Evaluation criteria

  • International scientific standing, including senior roles in anaesthesiology societies
  • Scientific publications
  • Invited national/international lectures Familiarity with ESAIC processes and structure
  • Experience in teaching and organising scientific meetings Editorial and grant award experience

2. Other criteria

  • Strategic and diplomatic leadership skills, and the ability to work across organisational and cultural boundaries.
  • Good relations with members and stakeholders in the anaesthesiology and intensive care community.
  • Very good command of spoken and written English.

Time commitment

The chair is expected to dedicate a significant amount of time to fulfil the responsibilities of the role, including attendance at regular Board meetings, participation in committee work, and representation at relevant events and conferences.


Therefore, the candidate must be able and willing to dedicate a substantial amount of time to this volunteer position.

Term of office

The future chairperson will be appointed Deputy Chair for 18 months from 1 July 2025, before becoming Scientific Committee Chair on 1 January 2027.
The total mandate lasts 6 years, split as follows:

  • Deputy Chair (18 months) from 1 July 2025 to 31 December 2026
  • Chair (3 years) from 1 January 2027 to 31 December 2029
  • Past-Chair (18 months) from 1 January 2030 to 30 June 2031

  • a conflict-of-interest (COI) statement, with a detailed list of current or possible
  • COI’s that may be relevant to the role;
  • indicate that you have read and understood the ESAIC code of conduct policy.

Applications must be submitted no later than 2 December 2024

Appointment will be made by the ESAIC Board following a recommendation by the Nominations Committee. Shortlisted applicants will be interviewed to select the successful candidate.
