In Memoriam: Professor Luciano Gattinoni (1945–2024)
The European Society of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care (ESAIC) joins the global medical community in mourning the passing of Professor Luciano Gattinoni, an extraordinary figure with a brilliant visionary mind whose innovative contributions and ground-breaking research have fundamentally revolutionised critically ill patient care and shaped modern intensive-care medicine.
Born in Milan in January 12 1945, Professor Gattinoni embarked on a distinguished career that redefined the concept of critical care and our understanding of mechanical ventilation and Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS). His pioneering research in applying lung-protective ventilation strategies and extracorporeal gas exchange stand as a cornerstone of critical care practice influencing the care of patients worldwide and saving countless lives. His charisma, his passion for discovery, and his commitment to the highest standards of care have inspired generations of clinicians and researchers and remain a beacon for all in the field of anaesthesiology and intensive care.
Throughout his illustrious career, Professor Gattinoni collaborated with leading institutions and professional societies, including ESAIC. His influence extended far beyond his published works, as he was a mentor, a visionary, and a dedicated advocate for evidence-based practice.
As we reflect on his remarkable life and achievements, ESAIC honours Professor Gattinoni’s immeasurable contributions to our field.
