The ESAIC hosts the Euroanaesthesia and Focus Meeting congresses that serve as platforms for cutting-edge science and innovation in the field. Euroanaesthesia is one of the world’s largest and most influential scientific congresses for anaesthesia professionals. Held annually throughout Europe, our congress is a contemporary event geared towards education, knowledge exchange and innovation in anaesthesia, intensive care, pain and perioperative medicine, as well as a platform for immense international visibility for scientific research.

The Specialist Societies contribute to high-quality educational opportunities for European anaesthesiologists and intensivists, fostering discussion and sharing, while the National Societies, through NASC, maintain standards, promote events and courses, and facilitate connections. All partnerships collectively drive dialogue, learning, and growth in the anaesthesiology and intensive care sector.

Examinations Committee

The Examinations Committee is responsible for supervising, coordinating and advising on the organisation of the European Diploma in Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care (EDAIC) and maintaining as well as improving the standard of the examination.

The Chairperson is appointed by and reports to the ESAIC Board of Directors. The committee members include the Director of EDAIC Part I MCQ Bank, the Director of EDAIC Part II Guided Question Bank, a representative of the UEMS/EBA and the Examinations Coordinators. The appointed members and Chairperson serve for a term of three years with the possibility of successive one-year appointments up to a maximum of eight years.

Subcommittee Part I

The Examinations Subcommittee Part I is responsible for the practical organisation of the EDAIC Part I and MCQ data bank.

The Chairperson is the Director of the EDAIC Part I MCQ Bank and reports to the Examinations Committee. The Chairperson is in charge of compiling 60 MCQ for Paper A (Basic Sciences) on an annual basis, while one member of the Subcommittee is in charge of compiling 60 MCQ for Paper B (Anaesthesia and Intensive Care) on an annual basis (that person should also be part of the Examinations Committee).

The Subcommittee members include the Chairperson of the Examinations Committee, members with special responsibility for translations (1 member per language into which MCQs are translated), representatives from those countries using the examination as their national examination, the individual in charge of the MCQ Bank Anaesthesia and Intensive Care, and the Examinations Coordinators. Examinations Coordinators have no voting rights; they have an advisory and administrative role.

The Chair and members of the Examinations Subcommittee Part I can serve for a period of three years with the possibility of successive one-year appointments up to a maximum of eight years.

Subcommittee Part II

The Examinations Subcommittee Part II is responsible for the practical organisation of the EDAIC Part II examination.

The Chairperson is the Director of Part II Guided Question Bank and reports to the Examinations Committee. The members include the Chairperson of the Examinations Committee, representatives from countries adopting EDAIC Part II as a national mandatory examination (maximum one per country), representatives from host centres for the Part II examination, up to four senior examiners from four different countries and the Examinations Coordinators. One of the members of the Subcommittee Part II will help to supervise the distribution of Part II questions within each Part II centre every year; this person should also be part of the Examinations Committee. Examinations Coordinators have no voting rights; they have an advisory and administrative role.

The Chair and members of the Examinations Subcommittee Part II can serve for a period of three years with the possibility of successive one-year appointments up to a maximum of eight years.

OLA Subcommittee

The On-Line Assessment Subcommittee is responsible for the practical organisation and development of the On-Line Assessment (OLA). This includes the annual creation and translation of the OLA Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs).

The OLA Subcommittee is made up of members, a chairperson and the Examinations Coordinators. One of the members of the OLA Subcommittee is the Examinations Committee Chairperson. The OLA Subcommittee Chair and Part I Subcommittee Chair can be the same person. Examinations Coordinators have no voting rights; they have an advisory and administrative role. The OLA Subcommittee can be enlarged depending on the needs and with the express approval of the ESAIC Board.

The chairperson and members of the On-Line Assessment Subcommittee can serve for a period of three years with the possibility of successive one-year appointments up to a maximum of eight years.
