The ESAIC is dedicated to supporting professionals in anaesthesiology and intensive care by serving as the hub for development and dissemination of valuable educational, scientific, research, and networking resources.

The ESAIC hosts the Euroanaesthesia and Focus Meeting congresses that serve as platforms for cutting-edge science and innovation in the field. These events bring together experts, foster networking, and facilitate knowledge exchange in anaesthesiology, intensive care, pain management, and perioperative medicine. Euroanaesthesia is one of the world’s largest and most influential scientific congresses for anaesthesia professionals. Held annually throughout Europe, our congress is a contemporary event geared towards education, knowledge exchange and innovation in anaesthesia, intensive care, pain and perioperative medicine, as well as a platform for immense international visibility for scientific research.

Professional Growth

The ESAIC's mission is to foster and provide exceptional training and educational opportunities. The ESAIC ensures the provision of robust and standardised examination and certification systems to support the professional development of anaesthesiologists and to ensure outstanding future doctors in the field of anaesthesiology and intensive care.

The ESAIC aims to advance patient outcomes and contribute to the progress of anaesthesiology and intensive care evidence-based practice through research. The ESAIC Clinical Trial Network (CTN), the Academic Contract Research Organisation (A-CRO), the Research Groups and Grants all contribute to the knowledge and clinical advances in the peri-operative setting.

EU Projects

The ESAIC is actively involved as a consortium member in numerous EU funded projects. Together with healthcare leaders and practitioners, the ESAIC's involvement as an EU project partner is another way that it is improving patient outcomes and ensuring the best care for every patient.

Patient Safety

The ESAIC aims to promote the professional role of anaesthesiologists and intensive care physicians and enhance perioperative patient outcomes by focusing on quality of care and patient safety strategies. The Society is committed to implementing the Helsinki Declaration and leading patient safety projects.

To ESAIC is committed to implementing the Glasgow Declaration and drive initiatives towards greater environmental sustainability across anaesthesiology and intensive care in Europe.

The ESAIC works in collaboration with industry, national societies, and specialist societies to promote advancements in anaesthesia and intensive care. The Industry Partnership offers visibility and engagement opportunities for industry participants with ESAIC members, facilitating understanding of specific needs in anaesthesiology and in intensive care. This partnership provides resources for education and avenues for collaborative projects enhancing science, education, and patient safety. The Specialist Societies contribute to high-quality educational opportunities for European anaesthesiologists and intensivists, fostering discussion and sharing, while the National Societies, through NASC, maintain standards, promote events and courses, and facilitate connections. All partnerships collectively drive dialogue, learning, and growth in the anaesthesiology and intensive care sector.

Guidelines play a crucial role in delivering evidence-based recommendations to healthcare professionals. Within the fields of anaesthesia and intensive care, guidelines are instrumental in standardizing clinical practices and enhancing patient outcomes. For many years, the ESAIC has served as a pivotal platform for facilitating continuous advancements, improving care standards and harmonising clinical management practices across Europe.

With over 40 years of publication history, the EJA (European Journal of Anaesthesiology) has established itself as a highly respected and influential journal in its field. It covers a wide range of topics related to anaesthesiology and intensive care medicine, including perioperative medicine, pain management, critical care, resuscitation, and patient safety.

Congress Newsletter 2021

EA21 Newsletter: Thank you from the President of the ESAIC and Scientific Chair

Like many others, our community has faced many challenges and loss of life due to this pandemic. We would like to recognize all of you who have continued to work tirelessly during these times to continue to save lives. We had hoped to be able to meet in person this year in Munich, but due to the challenges we continue to face, this was again not possible. Fortunately, we do have the technology to meet virtually – with our peers and experts, to share knowledge, and to continue to support each other and give each other the strength and knowledge to be the support our community and patients need.

We would like to extend a very big THANK YOU to all of our attendees who were able to join us online this year for our virtual edition of Euroanaesthesia.

This year’s Euroanaesthesia proved to be an engaging and educational congress for our many attendees. We had over 3600 attendees, 49 Participating societies and industry companies, 103 hours of content, 244 speakers from 26 countries, 113 sessions, 306 presentations and 18 learning tracks.

We would also like to acknowledge and thank our leadership and faculty for contributing to the success of Euroanaesthesia. Knowing what a difficult and complex time we continue to face; we appreciate even more their commitment and involvement.

This year we had the pleasure to introduce a new plenary session, The Professor Ibsen Lecture, given by Prof. Antonio Pesenti (Milan, Italy) on the Intensive Care-focused topic “Anaesthesiologists in the frontline against COVID-19”. It was a great honour for us to have Professor Pesenti present the first opening lecture dedicated to Intensive Care Medicine organised in Euroanaesthesia.

We would also like to extend a big thank you to Dr Bisola Onajin-Obembe (Port Harcourt, Nigeria), who gave a riveting talk for this year’s Sir Robert Macintosh Lecture. Her topic, “Anaesthesia Workforce Pipeline: Pass on the Baton”, highlighted – and gave voice to – a very timely and timeless call to action.

And of course, we also owe the success of the congress to all our speakers who made this year’s session line-up so engaging. Their willingness to jump into a change in format and still provide excellent information is a testament to the strength of our community.

While not able to meet face to face as we had planned, there were still plenty of opportunities to share knowledge and best practices and hear about the latest innovations in basic and clinical science, education and quality, and patient safety improvement. The best part about going virtual for Euroanaesthesia was that our attendees could join us at any time from any location, opening up our congress to an even larger global community.

Euroanaesthesia’s virtual exhibition and Industry symposiums provided us with an in-depth view of new projects, developments, and innovations in the field of anaesthesia and intensive care. Our entire community (even those who did not attend the congress) can visit our exhibitor area and review the industry sessions until 19 March 2022!

Euroanaesthesia is more than just three days of science and information – it is a lifetime of knowledge that can now be accessed at any time.

Euroanaesthesia continues to offer a unique global forum for a free exchange of science and medical strategy by bringing together practising physicians, academics, scientists, and clinical researchers. Standing united and working together, we can create a better future.

Thank you again for joining us online this year and we look forward to seeing you next year in Milan, Italy 4-6 June 2022 for the next Euroanaesthesia!
