Patient Safety and Quality Committee Chairperson

The term of office will start on 1 January 2027.

Deadline for applications is 22 June 2026.

The ESAIC is seeking to recruit the future Chairperson of the Patient Safety and Quality Committee (PSQC).

The committee

The Patient Safety and Quality Committee fulfils the ESAIC’s goal to improve perioperative patient safety, quality of care and patient outcomes in Europe and across the world.

The role

The Chair of the Patient and Quality Committee (PSQC) is a pivotal leadership role within ESAIC. This position is responsible for developing patient safety activities, advocating for patient safety, e.g. through the Helsinki Declaration 2.0, and fostering research in projects like the Pripsaic and Safest projects. The PSQC chair is disseminating the latest knowledge and Patient Safety strategies, organising education initiatives such as Masterclasses and workshops, and is collaborating and networking with other societies.

Key Responsibilities

Duties and tasks of the PSQC Chair:

Strategic Leadership

  1. To lead and coordinate the activities of the PSQC as well as ESAIC Patient Safety and Quality Projects in collaboration with the ESAIC Board of Directors, and with other institutions of the Society;
  2. To identify and promote innovations and best practices, to further increase the quality of the Patient Safety initiatives and launch new activities and projects;
  3. To advise the ESAIC Board of Directors concerning Patient Safety related matters.

Governance

  • To prepare and chair at least 1 PSQ Committee meeting per year at Euroanaesthesia, and e-meetings throughout the year, ensuring effective communication, participation, and adherence to established governance principles.
  • To monitor the financial outcome and ethical compliance of the Committee activities, in accordance with ESAIC policies.
  • To liaise with other committees, to make sure that the PSQC supports other ESAIC initiatives.

Operational

  • To collaborate closely with the ESAIC Headquarters in Brussels throughout the year.
  • To write an annual report about the activities and achievements of the committee, to be presented to the Council and the General Assembly (supported by ESAIC Headquarters).
  • To elaborate the annual budget to fund PSQC activities;
  • To support ESAIC newsletter and supervise the ESAIC PSQC website’s published contents.

Additional Responsibilities

Fulfil any other duties assigned in the ESAIC Bylaws, governance policies, or internal committee procedures, ensuring the integrity, quality, and continuity of ESAIC’s activities.

Candidate Profile & Requirements

Eligibility criteria

  • The candidate must have been an Active or Affiliate member for at least the last two years on the date of the application deadline.
  • Compliance with the Nomination policy. Therefore:
  • Candidates who are already part of the committee are eligible if their cumulative mandate will not exceed 7 years.
  • The chair cannot hold other positions within the same committee and cannot be chair of any other ESAIC committee.

Qualifications and skills

Required qualifications and essential skills

  • Be a highly respected, certified anaesthesiologist and have an established track record in the field of anaesthesiology and/or intensive care;
  • Be an active leader in the area of Patient Safety and Quality: involvement in projects, education, publications, and invited lectures related to patient safety and quality will be considered.
  • Recognised standing within the professional community
  • Previous experience in ESAIC and familiarity with its processes and structure.
  • Fluency in English

Preferred qualifications and desirable skills

  • International scientific standing, including senior roles in Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care societies;
  • Scientific publications;
  • Invited national/international lectures;
  • Strategic and diplomatic leadership skills, and the ability to work across organisational and cultural boundaries;
  • Good relations with members and stakeholders in the Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care community.

Availability

This position requires a significant amount of time to fulfil the responsibilities of the role, including meeting attendance, Committee work and participation in Patient Safety educational activities.

Conflict of Interest and Code of Conduct

  • Full disclosure of any actual or potential conflicts of interest is required, in line with the society’s policy.
  • Expected to adhere to and uphold the principles set out in the society’s Code of Conduct.

Term of office

The new Chair of the Patient Safety will be elected for a term of 3 years, followed by a 1-year period as Past-Chair of the Committee.

The term of office is set to start on 1 January 2027.

  • Chair from 1 Jan. 2027 to 31 Dec. 2029
  • Past-Chair from 1 Jan. 2029 to 31 Dec. 2029

Applications must be received no later than 22 June 2026 at 23:59 CEST.

Complete applications will be reviewed by the Patient and Safety and Quality Committee and the Nominations Committee. Please note that an interview of short-listed candidates may be organised. Following the interview, the panel will give a recommendation to the ESAIC Board of Directors, who will appoint the new chair.
