Euroanaesthesia is one of the world’s largest and most influential scientific congresses for anaesthesia professionals. Held annually throughout Europe, our congress is a contemporary event geared towards education, knowledge exchange and innovation in anaesthesia, intensive care, pain and perioperative medicine, as well as a platform for immense international visibility for scientific research.

The Specialist Societies contribute to high-quality educational opportunities for European anaesthesiologists and intensivists, fostering discussion and sharing, while the National Societies, through NASC, maintain standards, promote events and courses, and facilitate connections. All partnerships collectively drive dialogue, learning, and growth in the anaesthesiology and intensive care sector.

With over 40 years of publication history, the EJA (European Journal of Anaesthesiology) has established itself as a highly respected and influential journal in its field. Research Committee Chairperson

The term of office will start on 1 January 2027.

Deadline for applications is 21 June 2026.

The ESAIC Research Committee (RC) is seeking to recruit a new Chairperson for the Research Committee. The vacancy will occur as of 1st January 2027.

Deadline for applications is 21st June 2026 (23:59 CEST).

Key Responsabilities

The Committee is currently composed of nine members. The RC Chairperson position requires close liaison with the Research Department of the ESAIC headquarters in Brussels. This requires as a minimum bi-monthly phone calls with the Research staff.

The Research Committee fulfils the following functions:

  • Review grant applications in the fields of clinical and basic sciences relevant to Anaesthesia, Intensive Care and Pain Medicine, and to make recommendations for the award of grants.
  • Advise on the organisation and management of the grant evaluation process.
  • Advise the ESAIC Board on the range of research grant schemes offered by  ESAIC.
  • Play an active role in the ESAIC Clinical Trial Network.
  • Advise on EU-consortium activities in which ESAIC is taking part.
  • Advise on the organisation and management of the Research Mentorship Programme.
  • Play an active role in the improvement of the activities of the Committee.
  • The chair of the RC is also a member of the Board of Directors (as mentioned in the ESAIC Bylaws items 34-37.
  • In the quality of Board Member, the chair will participate, as required and established by the ByLaws, in Board Council and General Assembly meetings.
  • The Research Committee, and its chair, shall always act under the responsibility of the Board of Directors and shall report periodically to the Board of Directors on its activities, and/or at the request of the Board of Directors. The Committee Chair shall not however represent the association vis-à-vis third parties.
  • Additional responsibilities: the RC Chair fulfils any other duties assigned in the ESAIC Bylaws, governance policies, or internal committee procedures, ensuring the integrity, quality, and continuity of ESAIC’s research activities.

Eligibility and Requirements for application

The Research Committee Chairperson will meet the following criteria:

  • Must be a qualified anaesthesiologist
  • Experience in writing grant applications and obtaining competitive funding
  • Experience in reviewing grant applications
  • Expertise in clinical and/or laboratory research is required
  • Established academic reputation
  • Links with national/European Anaesthesiology and/or Intensive Care societies
  • Fluency in English
  • Applicant must present with an ESAIC active membership(1) for at least 3 consecutive calendar years on the day of the application deadline (active membership for 2023-2024-2025)
  • Compliance with the Nomination policy. Therefore:
    • candidates who are already part of the committee are eligible if their cumulative mandate will not exceed 7 years.
    • The chair cannot be chair of any other ESAIC committee during his or her term.

IMPORTANT! Applicants must ensure that they can dedicate sufficient time to this commitment. Timely and continuous communication with the Research Committee and ESAIC Headquarters is expected, to ensure the smooth running of the committee’s projects.

(1) Active ESAIC members must be physicians who has completed an accredited anaesthesiology training programme, who is certified to practice anaesthesiology and who is legally licensed to practice medicine in a European country as defined by the World Health Organisation.

Conflict of Interest and Code of Conduct

  • Full disclosure of any actual or potential conflict of interest is required, in line with the society’s policy
  • Expected to adhere to and uphold the principles set out in the society’s Code of Conduct

Term of office

The tenure of the chairmanship is for three years, plus 1 year as past chair.

Term of office will start on 1st January 2027.

  • Chair from 1 Jan. 2027 to 31 Dec. 2029
  • Past-Chair from 1 Jan. 2030 to 31 Dec. 2030

How to apply

To apply, candidates must complete the application form and include the following:

  • Upload a CV (maximum of 2 sides of A4).
  • List of publications, including Hirsch Index (that must be calculated via Scopus)
  • Short outline (maximum one page A4) of your perspectives as RC Chair.
  • Provide a conflict-of-interest (COI) statement, detailing any current or potential COIs relevant to the role.
  • Statement of adherence to the ESAIC code of conduct.

 Application deadline – 21st June 2026 (23:59 CEST).

The appointment will be made by the ESAIC Board following recommendation by the Nominations Committee. It is possible that interviews will be held to select the successful candidate.
