Scientific Committee- Vacancy for the Chair Position in Scientific Forum 5 Devices and Technology

The term of office will start on 1 January 2027.

Deadline for applications is 22 June 2026.

The committee

The Scientific Committee provides a European platform for contact and exchange of ideas and scientific initiatives in the fields of anaesthesia, intensive care, perioperative, critical emergency and pain medicine, with an aim of producing scientific content for conferences and educational programmes organised by the ESAIC. The committee is organised in 5 Scientific Forums, gathering several expert groups focusing on a specific area of expertise.

The role

The ESAIC Scientific Committee (SC) is seeking to recruit a new Forum Chair to fill the position opening in Scientific Forum 5: Devices and Technology. This Forum is led by one chair, a specialist in Anaesthesiology and/or Intensive Care Medicine, coordinating the activities of the group working on the following areas:

  • AI & robots;
  • Telemedicine;
  • 3D & Virtual Reality (VR);
  • Automation;
  • Biomarkers; etc.

Forum chairs are members of the ESAIC Scientific Committee, as representatives of their forum and specialty.
For this position, we are looking for an anaesthesiologist or specialist in intensive care medicine, with specific expertise in one or more topics listed above and covered by the forum.

Key Responsibilities

In this structure, forum chairs are appointed to lead the different forums and have the following duties:

Strategic Leadership & Governance

  • Providing strategic direction by defining and implementing the scientific strategy and priorities of the forum.
  • Ensuring alignment with the latest clinical evidence, innovations, and international guidelines.
  • Fostering cohesive vision across forum members based on a culture of innovation, transparency, collaboration, and continuous improvement to enhance the impact, relevance, and accessibility of ESAIC’s scientific congresses.
  • Facilitating collaboration with other forums, especially when developing scientific content in overlap with other forums’ specialty.

 Chairs are invited to attend meetings of other forums when deemed relevant.

Operational

  • Coordinating the work and decisions within their forum.

This includes ensuring submission of relevant programme proposals along with suggestions for topics and speakers (including themselves) for the scientific programme of the annual Euroanaesthesia Congress, and other ESAIC educational events (webinars, podcasts, e-learning modules, and other formats).

  • Reviewing and commenting session proposals submitted for the annual congress by targeted groups of submitters, including other scientific forums, ESAIC committees and ESAIC members.
  • Assessing abstracts submitted for presentation at Euroanaesthesia (EA), participating in the Best Abstract process selection and other abstract-related activities during the annual congress.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Contributing to or coordinating the content development of any other educational activities linked to the topics covered by the forum.
  • Undertaking additional responsibilities as decided by the Scientific Committee and/or Board.

Candidate Profile & Requirements

Eligibility criteria

Only ESAIC active and affiliate members can apply for the forum chair position in the scientific committee. Applicants must have held one of these memberships without interruption for at least the last two years on the date of the application deadline.

Compliance with the Nomination policy. Therefore:

  • Members of the forum can apply for the chair position as far as the cumulated term of office (member + chair + past chair) does not exceed 7 years.
  • The chair cannot hold other positions within the same committee and cannot be chair of any other ESAIC committee.
  • The forum may include no more than two members (including the chair) working in the same country and no more than one member from the same institution.

Only applications that meet all of the above eligibility criteria will be considered for review.

Qualifications and skills

Applicants must:

  • Have at least 10 years of clinical practice (post-residency) and a proven track record and established international network in the field of anaesthesiology and/or intensive care medicine with a specific focus on innovations and new technologies.
  • Have a recognised standing within the professional community.
  • Be fluent in English, and apt to give lectures and act as speakers and/or moderators in relevant ESAIC scientific and educational programmes, including Euroanaesthesia.
  • Have experience in scientific leadership, education, or conference organisation.
  • Possess excellent communication, organisational, and leadership skills.
  • Demonstrate strong collaborative and inclusive leadership capabilities.

Availability

Applicants must also ensure that they can dedicate sufficient time to this commitment. Timely and continuous communication with the Scientific Committee and ESAIC Headquarters is expected, to ensure the smooth running of the committee’s projects.

Conflict of Interest and Code of Conduct

  • Full disclosure of any actual or potential conflicts of interest is required, in line with the society’s policy
  • Expected to adhere to and uphold the principles set out in the society’s Code of Conduct

Term of office

The term of office is 3 years + 1 year as past-chair, subject to availability and commitment to the chair’s tasks. The term of office is set to start on 1 January 2027.

  • Chair from 1 Jan. 2027 to 31 Dec. 2029
  • Past-Chair from 1 Jan. 2030 to 31 Dec. 2030

  3. Provide a conflict-of-interest (COI) statement, detailing any actual or potential COIs relevant to the role;
