President-Elect

The term of office will start on 1 January 2027.

Deadline for applications is 11 May 2026.

We are calling for applications to the position of President-Elect of ESAIC. The mandate starts as President-Elect (2027), automatically continues as President (2028 & 2029) and ends as Past-President in 2030. The role of the President-Elect is to support the President in running the Society, hence (s)he will be involved in all matters.

Role

The President of the Board of Directors is a critical leadership role within ESAIC. This position involves guiding the strategic direction of the organisation, overseeing governance, and collaborating with key stakeholders to advance the mission and vision of ESAIC. The President promotes ESAIC as the leading European organisation in anaesthesiology & intensive care.

Responsibilities

Key responsibilities are:

Strategic Leadership

  • Providing visionary leadership to the Board of Directors, guiding the development and execution of strategic goals aligned with the medical society’s mission and objectives;
  • Fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement to enhance the impact and relevance of ESAIC;
  • Board Governance: Presiding over the meetings of Board of Directors, Council and General Assembly, ensuring effective communication, participation, and adherence to established governance principles;

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Representing ESAIC at external events, cultivating and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders, including other international and specialist societies, healthcare professionals, industry partners, and governmental agencies;
  • Acting as a spokesperson for the medical society, articulating its mission and values to the broader healthcare community;
  • Financial Oversight: Working closely with the Treasurer and the Finance Committee to ensure the financial stability of the society, overseeing budget development, financial reporting, and fiscal responsibility;

Advocacy

  • Advocating for issues relevant to the medical society’s mission, collaborating with external organisations, policymakers (and the media) to promote awareness and support for key initiatives;
  • Enhancing the public profile of the society through effective communication strategies and community engagement.

Term of Office

The term of office lasts 4 years in total and includes serving as

  • President-Elect from 1 Jan. 2027 to 31 Dec. 2027,
  • President from 1 Jan. 2028 to 31 Dec. 2029, and
  • Past-President from 1 Jan. 2030 to 31 Dec. 2030.

Eligibility

The composition, eligibility criteria & election to the Board of Directors are detailed in Title VIII & Title IX of the By-laws of the Society, which are published on our website.

  • Candidates must have been ESAIC Active Members for at least three (3) consecutive full calendar years prior to their election to the Board of Directors (§34.2);
  • The President and the President-Elect shall work professionally in different countries (§42.1), hence candidates for this election shall not be working professionally in Israel.

Qualifications

  • Established track record in the field of anaesthesiology & intensive care – highly respected senior anaesthesiologists with an international reputation for scientific &/or clinical excellence;
  • Established leadership qualities & exemplary behaviour towards the community;
  • Ability to cooperate with major professional organisations;
  • In-depth knowledge of European healthcare trends, policies, and issues;
  • Strong understanding of the industry connected to ESAIC & experience in working with industry in the fields of research, education & innovative projects;
  • Excellent communication & interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage & inspire diverse stakeholders;
  • Commitment to the mission & values of the Society.

Time commitment

This position requires a significant amount of time to fulfil the responsibilities of the roles, including attendance at regular Board meetings, participation in committee work, & representation at relevant events & conferences (min. 12h/week availability).

Others

The President is

  • Officer of the Board of Directors;
  • Member of the Council;
  • Member of the Finance Committee;
  • Member of the Nominations Committee.

The President shall have the powers specifically granted to him/her in the By-Laws:

  • Managing & administering the affairs of the Association according to the policies set by the Board of Directors, the Council, & the General Assembly, as defined in these By-Laws;
  • Adopting the agenda of the meetings of the General Assembly, after preparation by the Chief Executive Officer;
  • Presiding the meetings of the General Assembly, the Council & the Board of Directors;
  • Signing and approving the minutes of the meetings of the General Assembly (if applicable), the Council & the Board of Directors;
  • In the event of a tie vote, having the casting vote within the General Assembly, the Council & the Board of Directors; and
  • Acting as a conciliator when differences of opinion occur, both within the Association & vis-à-vis third parties.

The President reports to the Board of Directors. The functions and responsibilities of the President may change over time.

Note that your application documents will be circulated to the Council Members, that you will be requested to introduce yourself & present your motivation & goals during the in-person Council Meeting on Friday 5 June in Rotterdam in the frame of Euroanaesthesia 2026.
