Following up on our article from last April we would like to present the new Trainee Committee in place since January 2022.

tc 300x151 1The ESAIC Trainee Committee (ESAICTC) continues the mission to establish a network between the approximately 22.000 European Anaesthesiology Trainees (the ESAIC Trainee Network (ESAICTN)), from the countries represented in the ESAIC Council and National Anaesthesiologists Societies Committee (NASC) and to strengthen their visibility within the Society.

The team is organised in 4 Task Forces (Education, European and International Trainee Sections, Social Networks and Euroanaesthesia Trainees’ Program) and there are currently Trainee Representatives in 12 other ESAIC Committees and Task Forces. In the following you will learn more about our past and upcoming work:

Iulia Crisan, originally from Romania, is a 2nd-year trainee in Switzerland. After having the opportunity to work in three countries (Romania, France and Switzerland) and benefiting from an Erasmus scholarship during her studies in Germany, she joins our team knowing the importance of experiencing different educational systems in Europe. She is fond of technology and education. She is looking forward to coordinating the Education Task Force, supporting the ESAIC educational offers and engaging trainees in new educational formats.

Following Olivier Duranteau’s work, who focused on teaching and evaluation methods for trainees. Supporting the EDAIC was one of his main goals. You can read the results of his Survey about preparation for the EDAIC in the ESAIC Newsletter last month.

Iulia is working closely with our Trainee Representatives from the e-Learning, Guidelines, ATAIC, PSQ, Simulation and Sustainability Committees.

Despite the continued challenges posed by the COVID-19 Pandemic Albert de Bettignies from Austria & Nadine van Veenendaal from the Netherlands managed to maintain contact virtual contact with the national trainee representatives. Apart from overseeing the European and International Trainee Sections Task Force, they are also the council trainee representatives.

Together with the ESAIC Council and NASC they will increase the cooperation between national trainee representatives and national trainee societies and strengthen the connection to the trainee network.

The ESAIC trainee network is mainly represented on a variety of social media channels. These connect anaesthesiology trainees across borders by offering a platform of exchange and information that we believe is useful to our followers. We were able to increase the number of followers on Instagram by 81%, LinkedIn by 332% and Facebook by 67% in the past year. Our social media networks are managed by the Social Media Taskforce Alexandra and George.

Alexandra Trinks is a 4th-year trainee in the LMU university hospital in Munich. She joined the social network task force 2021 as a task force member. She aims to further increase the number of followers and offer fun and educational content open to everybody.

George Karras is a 3rd-year trainee, currently in Hippocrates’ General Hospital of Thessaloniki, Greece. Besides his educational interests, he believes that there is more to discover in Anaesthesiology when there is communication between all trainees. It’s the discussion and the exchange of experience that can help us expand our horizons, both scientifically and as humans. He believes communication is the key to advancement.

Both Alexandra and George are continuing the fabulous work of Christoph Blacker and Elena Gjorchevska. Daily posts regarding ESAIC activities such as “Educational Saturday”, “Survey Sunday” and “Funny Friday“ continue to be an important part of our online presence.

Last year a new format, called Facebook Live Session, came to life. Expert members of the ESAIC community hold a lecture about a variety of subjects ranging from resuscitation to ethics and fatigue on our Facebook platform, followed by a Q & A. With the help of the ESAIC Patient Safety and Quality Committee and Scientific Committee, we were able to host these sessions every month.

A valuable thank you goes also to the two Task Force members Sanja Golubic (Republic of North Macedonia) and Emelie Risberg (Sweden) who supported us on our social media channels.

After the unfortunate cancellation of the physical Euroanaesthesia 2021 event in Munich, we kept trainees updated with Euroanaesthesia’s online activities during the congress. Looking into the future with 6 sessions organised by the Trainee Committee we are preparing our contribution for Euroanaesthesia 2022 in Milan and further possible activities to connect trainees during the congress.

The Euroanaesthesia Taskforce is now managed by Diogo Mendes Morais, a 2nd-year Portuguese trainee in Vila Real. His main goal is the elaboration of the trainee’s scientific program for Euroanesthesia. He intends to straighten the bond between all trainees through the connection between the Trainee Network, Trainee Committee and our society.

He continues the work of Eva Klabusayová who coordinated the Trainee Committee activities during both online EA20 and EA21.

We would like to thank Tereza Musilová from the Czech Republic for her past contribution together with Eva to put the trainee program together during Euroanaesthesia.

The cooperation with the European Board of Anaesthesiology (EBA) continues as the Trainee Committee Chair, Igor Abramovich, is an observing member within the European Union Medical Specialities European Board of Anaesthesiology. (UEMS-EBA) and the new European Junior Doctors (EJD) representative Žilvinas Jucius, a 1st-year resident doctor of anaesthesia and intensive care from Lithuania. The EJD’s representative to the UEMS Anesthesiology section is a co-opted member of our Trainee Committee. He is concerned about the state of anesthesiologists and intensive care doctors because of the COVID19 pandemic. He sees their training as one of the most crucial aspects facing future challenges in healthcare. Together with the EBA, the Trainee Committee is supporting the Fatigue Survey.

Our work also extends to other ESAIC Committees with the following Representatives:

Dora Karmelic (Croatia) representing Trainee in the PSQ Committee working on Trainee involvement of the Peer Review in Patient Safety in Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care (PRIPSAIC) Project

Anne Blank (Germany) within the Simulation Committee working on a trainee simulation training survey

Tamara Skrisovska (Czech Republic) – supporting the e-Learning Committee with trainee needs

Lastly, the Trainee Committee would like to thank Bernardo Matias (Portugal) as the past chair for his major engagement within the society and the departing Trainee Representatives Eva Oliver Duraneau (Belgium), Eva Klabusayová (Czech Republic), Elena Gjorchevska (Republic of North Macedonia) and Christopher Blacker (Sweden) for their contribution towards all trainees in the ESAIC Trainee Network.
