A Transformative Exchange

My Experience and Skills Enhancement in Ljubljana

My name is Jaume Borrell Vega, and I am a fourth-year resident in Anaesthesiology and Critical Care at the Hospital Clínic of Barcelona. During May, June and July 2024, I participated in the ESAIC Exchange Programme (EP) at Ljubljana University Hospital, Slovenia. During this exchange, I focused mainly on regional anaesthesia, the department of traumatology, and airway management in the Ear-Nose-Throat (ENT) department.

This programme was not only an opportunity to advance my professional skills but also a chance to grow personally. Working in a different healthcare environment and with colleagues from another country was a very challenging and educational experience.

One of the most interesting aspects of my time in Ljubljana was the focus on regional anaesthesia, especially the usage of catheters. While I had been introduced to this technique during my training in Barcelona, they are not as commonly used in my home institution. Observing and practising this method extensively in Slovenia allowed me to deepen my understanding of its indications and applications. Moreover, practising the use of echography was another area where I gained significant hands-on experience. I will definitely bring this technique back home with me! Also, during my stay in the ENT department, I had the opportunity to learn different approaches to airway management in difficult intubation cases and intraoperative management of airway surgery.

Beyond the technical aspects, I was also exposed to a different workflow and approach to patient care, which encouraged me to reflect on my own future practices and consider how I might incorporate some of these strategies into my future work. Observing a different healthcare system, with its own set of challenges and solutions, was stimulating and challenging. Furthermore, stepping out of my comfort zone in a new environment, new language, new home, and new colleagues was demanding and maturing.

The team at Ljubljana University Hospital was very welcoming and friendly, and they made my experience very special. From the moment I arrived, they went out of their way to make me feel welcome and included. Their openness extended to sharing their expertise and fostering a positive and supportive learning environment.

The team’s willingness to answer my questions, offer feedback, and involve me in their daily activities significantly improved my learning experience. Their approach reminded me of the importance of mentorship in medical training and its impact on young professionals’ growth. Moreover, Slovenia has an incredible number of nature-related activities and breathtaking views throughout the country, which I enjoyed extensively.

Lastly, the ESAIC Exchange Programme allowed me to meet and work with colleagues from other parts of Europe. These connections have enriched my professional network, and I believe these connections will continue to benefit me throughout my career in future collaborations, when sharing best practices, or when simply exchanging ideas.

I am truly grateful for the opportunity to participate in the ESAIC Exchange Programme. It has been a transformative experience, providing me with new skills, knowledge, perspectives, and friendships to shape my future practice.

I strongly encourage other trainees to consider applying for this programme. It is an excellent opportunity to enhance your clinical skills and grow personally and professionally.

I have attached some photos of me performing an abdominal wall block, images showcasing the landscapes of northern Slovenia and pictures of friends from back home who visited me.
