Finally, after two years of online congresses, in 2022, we could gather in Milan for Euroanaesthesia and get back to handshakes, hugs, smiles and the excitement of the congress.  The remarkable opening ceremony with two exceptional plenary speakers, Dr Kate Prior and Prof. Kai Zacharowski, was just an amazing signal of what’s to follow. We are proud to have been able to organize an innovative and vibrant programme, boosting the Simlab and launching a new, interactive and fun-focused activity: the Serious Games – a combination of problem-based learning discussions and an escape room that allows teaching clinical information and developing management skills in a non-clinical environment. Because of the immense success of the Serious Games, the experience will be repeated in Glasgow, with new scenarios.

In October, we held the Focus Meeting on Perioperative Medicine “Update on perioperative myocardial damage” in Barcelona, one of the best congresses I have ever attended – with high-level speakers, interested participants, and enriching discussions.

The Scientific Committee 2022 built the content and contributed to many educational activities using podcasts, webinars, etc.  Additionally, it created a series dedicated to members only called “Hot topics in Intensive Care” where every month, leading speakers in the field record one episode (30 minutes) on the latest articles, research, papers and guidelines published in the last 12 months, per different topics. This series can be found on the ESAIC webpage in the Library for the interested audience.

2022 has been a landmark year for the Scientific Committee. We have completely reshaped the committee structure to allow collaboration and expand the expertise by including members from different backgrounds (anaesthesiologists, intensivists with no anaesthesia background, internists, cardiologists, pulmonologists, etc.) that will enrich the scientific perspectives. Happily, the implementation of the new structure has brought lots of attention, as reflected by the large number of applications we have received from valuable members who wished to be part of the Scientific Committee.  Therefore, the renovated Scientific Committee will start its mandate in 2023 and work on the programme for Euroanaesthesia 2024.

In 2023, the Focus Meeting will be dedicated to “Brain Health” and, for the very first time, it will be online. We have involved the Trainee Committee in this experience, hoping to give more learning opportunities to our young colleagues.

We are looking forward to Euroanaesthesia in Glasgow! The opening ceremony plenary speakers are getting ready (Prof. Jean-Louis Vincent, Mrs Nadine Montgomery), the “Dear Green Place” that will unite all sustainability educational programmes have been conceptualized and is going to be located in the exhibition, a new format called “ESAIC EXPO” will be launched to showcase all the ESAIC activities and include career and wellbeing, Research and EU projects, etc. In addition, numerous hands-on workshops, Serious Games, Simlab, and interactive/traditional sessions to fit all levels (from residents to chairs) will animate an intense yet exciting programme. Euroanaesthesia 2023 is designed to celebrate science, innovations, opportunities for bridging gaps between research groups and more.
