The ESAIC Advanced Patient Safety Course - Creating ambassadors for Patient Safety

The ESAIC Advanced Patient Safety Course is a new live course to teach patient safety tools to use in acute settings. We offer modern teaching using interactive group work and innovative 360-degree videos of key scenarios, followed by debriefing, to bring examples of critical situations to life. 

The APSC forms a key part of the Safer Care to Save Lives Programme, an ESAIC Patient Safety Education programme. The Safer Care to Save Lives Programme is a complete training path aimed at providing key knowledge on patient safety in acute settings: intensive care, anaesthesiology and perioperative care and emergency settings. It is built on the overarching principles of the Helsinki Declaration on Patient Safety in Anaesthesiology, the European Consensus Statement of the 2020 multi-society Patient Safety Summit at the European Parliament, and the WHO multi-professional Patient Safety Curriculum. It follows a stepwise, blended educational approach, including both online on-demand and live (either online or face-to-face) education. 

The ESAIC has for a long time worked to improve the standards and quality of safety for perioperative practice. Alongside the Helsinki Declaration on Patient Safety in Anaesthesiology, the ESAIC Patient Safety and Quality Committee has been one of the most active groups at the society. Through masterclasses, workshops and regular content at Euroanaesthesia, education has been placed at the forefront of its efforts. Until patient safety strategies become fully integrated into healthcare practices, it remains up to individuals and teams to make change happen.  

Leadership in patient safety can take many forms and is not reliant on a position in a hierarchy. Healthcare professionals attending 100% of the ASPC and who pass the course assessment will hold the ESAIC Advanced Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Patient Safety Certificate. We propose that bearers of this certificate be regarded as patient safety champions within their own institutions.  These champions will have the key knowledge to bring fresh ideas to make practice safer.

The APSC has been accredited by the European Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (EACCME®) for a maximum of 12 European CME credits (ECMEC®s). 

The APSC is aimed at all Health care professionals, patients and stakeholders interested in patient safety in acute settings: Intensive Care, Perioperative Care, Anaesthesia, Emergency and other settings where acute patients are treated.   

Learn by experiencing   

The educational targets focus on the following goals: 

1. Offer a fully integrated vision of patient safety culture during intensive care and anaesthesia, which will be applicable to all acute settings.
2. Provide a framework to apply patient safety tools in different situations.
3. Train in the methodology of learning from errors, the importance of critical incident reporting, system analysis, corrective action implementation and feedback.
4. Experience the value of human factors and practice resources to improve resolving crisis situations in acute settings as they happen.
5. Encourage attendees to advocate for patient safety in their work environments.
6. Help attendees join patient safety-related networks. 

The Advanced Patient Safety Course is a part of the ESAIC Safer Care to Save Lives Project, which is supported through an unrestricted educational grant from our Patient Safety Partners: Edwards Life Sciences, Getinge, Medtronic, Mindray and Philips Healthcare.
