Congresses

The ESAIC hosts the Euroanaesthesia congresses that serve as platforms for cutting-edge science and innovation in the field. These events bring together experts, foster networking, and facilitate knowledge exchange in anaesthesiology, intensive care, pain management, and perioperative medicine. Euroanaesthesia is one of the world’s largest and most influential scientific congresses for anaesthesia professionals. Held annually throughout Europe, our congress is a contemporary event geared towards education, knowledge exchange and innovation in anaesthesia, intensive care, pain and perioperative medicine, as well as a platform for immense international visibility for scientific research.

Professional Growth

The ESAIC's mission is to foster and provide exceptional training and educational opportunities. The ESAIC ensures the provision of robust and standardised examination and certification systems to support the professional development of anaesthesiologists and to ensure outstanding future doctors in the field of anaesthesiology and intensive care.

Back

Research

The ESAIC aims to advance patient outcomes and contribute to the progress of anaesthesiology and intensive care evidence-based practice through research. The ESAIC Clinical Trial Network (CTN), the Research Groups and Grants all contribute to the knowledge and clinical advances in the peri-operative setting.

Back

EU Projects

The ESAIC is actively involved as a consortium member in numerous EU funded projects. Together with healthcare leaders and practitioners, the ESAIC's involvement as an EU project partner is another way that it is improving patient outcomes and ensuring the best care for every patient.

Sustainability

The ESAIC is committed to implementing the Glasgow Declaration and drive initiatives towards greater environmental sustainability across anaesthesiology and intensive care in Europe.

Partnerships

The ESAIC works in collaboration with industry, national societies, and specialist societies to promote advancements in anaesthesia and intensive care. The Industry Partnership offers visibility and engagement opportunities for industry participants with ESAIC members, facilitating understanding of specific needs in anaesthesiology and in intensive care. This partnership provides resources for education and avenues for collaborative projects enhancing science, education, and patient safety. The Specialist Societies contribute to high-quality educational opportunities for European anaesthesiologists and intensivists, fostering discussion and sharing, while the National Societies, through NASC, maintain standards, promote events and courses, and facilitate connections. All partnerships collectively drive dialogue, learning, and growth in the anaesthesiology and intensive care sector.

Guidelines

Guidelines play a crucial role in delivering evidence-based recommendations to healthcare professionals. Within the fields of anaesthesia and intensive care, guidelines are instrumental in standardizing clinical practices and enhancing patient outcomes. For many years, the ESAIC has served as a pivotal platform for facilitating continuous advancements, improving care standards and harmonising clinical management practices across Europe.

The ESAIC LearnPath

A New Learning Experience Designed to Elevate Skills, Inspire Growth, and Shape the Future

In May 2025, the European Society of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care launched LearnPath on EEG, a new on-demand eLearning platform. This opportunity is designed for medical professionals who want to understand the fundamentals, refresh their knowledge, or explore current topics in anaesthesia and intensive care in greater depth.

What is the ESAIC LearnPath?

The ESAIC LearnPath is an innovative, holistic educational offer designed to support continuous professional development.

The LearnPath on EEG, the first released ESAIC LearnPath, features a curated series of original, expert-led pre-recorded video lectures (each approximately 10 minutes long) focusing on essential topics in EEG and split into four steps/topics:

These concise, high-quality learning modules are complemented by integrated assessment opportunities, allowing learners to reinforce knowledge, track progress, and build confidence as they advance.

Sharing expertise, Inspiring Professional Growth

The LearnPath on EEG brought together leading voices in neurophysiology, anaesthesia, and intensive care to help learners build confidence in interpreting raw and processed EEG signals, understand their relevance across diverse patient populations, and explore how EEG can guide clinical decision-making.

A diverse scientific faculty of 21 experts from different countries shared their knowledge on a wide range of topics:

Fundamentals: Covers the basics of EEG, including an introduction to EEG frequency ranges and power spectra, alpha oscillations, density spectral array principles, standardised nomenclature for EEG monitoring, the neurophysiological origins of EEG signals, and the strengths and limitations of processed EEG indices.

Interpreting the EEG: Focuses on identifying key EEG patterns (alpha, beta, delta, and burst suppression), recognising raw artefacts, using EEG for drug titration, assessing depth of sedation and consciousness, understanding EEG patterns during emergence, and integrating EEG with other monitoring modalities.

EEG in Special Populations: Addresses how EEG patterns vary across paediatric, elderly, frail, and ICU patients, and how EEG can help identify vulnerable brains before surgery.

Advanced Topics: Explores the relationship between EEG and nociception, intraoperative EEG patterns linked to postoperative outcomes, similarities and differences between sleep and anaesthesia EEG, and alternative sensor montages for index-based EEG monitoring.

Looking forward: What comes next?

Following the successful launch of the first LearnPath, the eLearning Committee of the European Society of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care, mindful of its community’s needs, will continue to offer asynchronous e-learning opportunities.

A second LearnPath focusing on Paediatrics will be released on 9 December 2025, in collaboration with the European Society for Paediatric Anaesthesiology (ESPA). As a comprehensive educational journey covering four important areas of interest (Basic Principles, Skills, Emergencies & Special Preoperative Considerations, Case Management for Paediatric Illnesses), the ESAIC LearnPath on Paediatrics will provide valuable insights to professionals seeking to develop their careers in paediatric anaesthesia.

Stay tuned to the ESAIC Academy and embark on your learning journey at your own pace and rhythm.
