Euroanaesthesia is one of the world’s largest and most influential scientific congresses for anaesthesia professionals. Held annually throughout Europe, our congress is a contemporary event geared towards education, knowledge exchange and innovation in anaesthesia, intensive care, pain and perioperative medicine, as well as a platform for immense international visibility for scientific research.

The Specialist Societies contribute to high-quality educational opportunities for European anaesthesiologists and intensivists, fostering discussion and sharing, while the National Societies, through NASC, maintain standards, promote events and courses, and facilitate connections. All partnerships collectively drive dialogue, learning, and growth in the anaesthesiology and intensive care sector.

Exchange Programme (EP) Committee Chairperson

The term of office will start on 1 January 2027.

Deadline for applications is 22 June 2026.

The ESAIC is seeking to recruit the future Chairperson of the Exchange Programme Committee.

The committee

The Exchange Programme Committee oversees the ESAIC Exchange Programme (EP) which creates opportunities for medical professionals around Europe to access training and share expertise beyond national borders, for a period of up to three months.

The Exchange Programme Committee is part of the umbrella committee Education and Training Committee (EdTC).

The role

The Chair of the Exchange Programme works in close liaison with The Education and Training Committee to foster valuable exchange of knowledge and professional ties between institutions and medical professionals around Europe.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership

  1. Define the selection of fellows each year through the rigorous review and scoring of doctors’ applications
  2. Grow the institutional network of the Programme by
  3. Reviewing aspiring Host centres’ applications, as per the standards set by the Committee.
  4. Actively recruiting Host centres, either directly or via the National Representatives (Members of Council or Presidents of the National Member Societies).
  5. Play an active role in the improvement of the Host Centres of the Exchange Programme.
  6. Generate reports to the ESAIC Board of Directors.
  7. Liaise with other committees with similar programmes and goals within and outside ESAIC.
  8. Devise and explore avenues for diversifying and improving the Programme.
  9. Promote the ESAIC Exchange Programme.
  10. Publish occasional reports in the ESAIC Newsletter.

Operational

  • Contribute to the preparation of the annual budget and documents in collaboration with the ESAIC headquarters.
  • The Chair will provide input and advice for the budget of the Exchange Programme Committee.
  • Regular reporting to the Education and Training Chair of the current activities.
  • Attend at least one, in-person, meeting of the Exchange Programme Committee at the annual Euroanaesthesia Congress and several e-meetings throughout the year.
    Travel expenses to attend meetings of the Committee are provided according to standard ESAIC policy.

Candidate Profile & Requirements

Eligibility criteria

  • The candidate must have been an Active or Affiliate member for at least the last two years on the date of the application deadline.
  • Compliance with the Nomination policy. Therefore:
  • candidates who are already part of the committee are eligible, if their cumulative mandate will not exceed 7 years.
  • The chair cannot hold other positions within the same committee and cannot be chair of any other ESAIC committee.

Qualifications and skills

Required qualifications and essentials skills

  • Experience of anaesthetic teaching and training nationally;
  • Contributions to ESAIC activities (or to a similar Society/mission);
  • Strong European network
  • National and international experience in organising/overseeing exams;
  • First-hand experience   with   exchange   and   fellowship   programmes  nationally and internationally, either:
  • Contributing to the smooth running of such a programme at institutional level,

and/or

  • Personal experience of being a fellow or trainee abroad.
  • Fluency in English

Preferred qualifications and desirable skills

  • Leadership skills and clear vision.
  • Collaborative skills.

Availability

This position requires a significant amount of time to fulfil the responsibilities of the role, including applications review and scoring over the summer months (July and August), attendance at regular meetings, and general Committee work.

Conflict of Interest and Code of Conduct

  • Full disclosure of any actual or potential conflicts of interest is required, in line with the society’s policy
  • Expected to adhere to and uphold the principles set out in the society’s Code of Conduct

Term of Office

The new Exchange Programme Committee will be elected for a term of 3 years, followed by a 1-year period as Past-Chair of the Committee.

The term of office is set to start on 1 January 2027.

  • Chair from 1 Jan. 2027 to 31 Dec. 2029
  • Past-Chair from 1 Jan. 2029 to 31 Dec. 2030

  • declaration of Conflict of Interest for the last 3 years
  • statement of adherence to the ESAIC Code of Conduct

Applications must be received no later than 22 June 2026 at 23:59 CEST.

Complete applications will be reviewed by the Exchange Programme Committee and the Nominations Committee. Applications are encouraged from active ESAIC members who meet the abovementioned criteria. Gender balance and representation from throughout Europe will be encouraged on all Committees.
