ESAIC endorses SAFEST Perioperative Patient Safety Recommendations
Strengthening a shared European approach to safer perioperative care
The European Society of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care has formally endorsed the SAFEST Perioperative Patient Safety Recommendations, marking an important step in advancing patient safety across the perioperative pathway.
Developed within the SAFEST project, a European Union–funded initiative, the recommendations provide a comprehensive, evidence-based framework to support safer care from preoperative assessment through to postoperative follow-up. They are accessible through the SAFEST Patient Safety Compass and are underpinned by a structured set of standards and measurable elements spanning key domains of perioperative practice.
By endorsing these recommendations, the ESAIC reinforces its commitment to high-quality, patient-centred and multidisciplinary care, and supports their dissemination across its international network of anaesthesiologists and intensive care specialists.
This endorsement contributes to the SAFEST project’s broader ambition to promote the uptake of standardised safety practices across Europe and beyond. It also lays the foundation for further collaboration with national societies and international organisations to support implementation, benchmarking and continuous quality improvement.
The ESAIC will continue to actively support the visibility and dissemination of the SAFEST recommendations through its communication channels and community engagement activities.

About SAFEST and ESAIC
SAFEST(Improving Patient Safety in Surgery across Europe) is a European Union–funded project dedicated to strengthening perioperative patient safety across the entire surgical pathway. Bringing together healthcare professionals, researchers and patients, SAFEST has developed a comprehensive set of evidence-based recommendations, supported by the Patient Safety Compass — a structured framework designed to guide implementation, self-evaluation and continuous quality improvement in clinical practice.
The European Society of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care is a key partner in the SAFEST consortium, contributing its scientific expertise and network to support the development, dissemination and adoption of these recommendations. As a leading European medical society representing anaesthesiologists and intensive care specialists, the ESAIC is committed to advancing patient care, promoting high standards in clinical practice, and supporting initiatives that improve safety and quality across perioperative medicine.
